My grandmother always had this wiry, tough, stiff, bristle brush hair. After chemo for her first breast removal, her hair grew back in softer. After the second one, it grew back in Classic Grandma White with soft curls. It's just lovely now!
Yeah, that whole "product" thing is suspect. They claim it can activate non-existent curls, but my hair is so fine that if I have too much product in it, it just looks greasy. And limp. And definitely not curly.
On the other hand, there is some wave in my hair now that was NEVER there 20 years ago, so maybe there's hope ...
