Now I'm confused. I only ever heard of Volendam before (with one L) but Vollendam with 2 Ls has a few google entries too. And it looks like the same place. Or is it?
And I'm GREEN WITH ENVY at you for meeting Moem, Stoneshop and Phoenix-Flight. It's so unfair!
Honestly? We've always spelled it with 2 Ls, but maybe that's a random Fries spelling? Who knows? I did a little research too (including looking at a map!) and changed it all to one. I think the single L must be the better spelling :)
Thanks for the lovely summary of your short and sweet trip. I think it's a matter of you only liking beer when you are on holiday... just saying.
Moem's work is amazing. I had no idea she did murals? The mural really has the look of the olde worlde ceramic painting that it's no doubt referencing! Amazing.
I super love that you stopped for a Windmill shot but believe it is lacking clogs and tulips...
You might be right about the beer :) I'm also wondering if I can only drink it in "foreign" ...
Moem can do lots of stuff -- banners, signage, etc. You've captured the exact look she was going for, and I have to say that as a Dutch girl who is really an American, it made me really happy to look at the olde worldness of it :) I was also amazed at the magnitude of the surface. It's two huge buildings on a major thoroughfare, and will be seen for years to come. Yay her!
LOLing at the klompen and tulpen comment. We joked about that a lot with my cousins. Also cheese, of course :) I do have wooden shoes in my living room, if that helps?
As someone who has not been grownup enough to drink beer for the last 40 years, I'd never push anyone into it :) but ... I can tell you that it was really good and really refreshing. And I actually liked it. I can't help but wonder if the "refreshing" part is sort of key -- I've always thought beer wasn't refreshing at all, which is partially why I didn't like it. That, and the "yeasty" flavor made me not so much a fan.
