The 12 Days of 2010 | Day 4

Dec 23, 2010 02:08

Oh man, not gonna lie, I kind of want to sleep forever. I planned to spend today writing my pjo_xchange project, but then I kind of spent it all out of the house. WHICH IS RARE FOR ME OKAY. Usually if I go anywhere, it's to show my face in a "hey, look, I didn't blow you off" kind of way and then I go home thirty minutes later and do awesome things like scroll through my Tumblr and read more fic.

But! Today I got my Christmas shopping done! And robin_2370_hood came with, which kept me from vacillating over "omg should I buy this or not" since I'm horrible at shopping alone. Nothing ever gets bought. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW NICE IT IS TO FINALLY HAVE GIFTS FOR MY FAMILY I no longer feel like the douchebag that never does anything useful.

okay okay I got us a toaster oven and some new microwavable plates. WHATEVER IMPORTANT GIFTS WE EAT.

I'm going to try to keep this reccing thing brief, because I need to sleep at some point, and I'm starting to get that this is boring scroll-on-by material and maybe not worth the amount of effort I put into it WHATEVA WHATEVA YOU CAN'T SHAME ME.

❄ | THE 12 DAYS OF 2010
☀ | a multi-fandom rec extravaganza
Day 4 | December 22

Note: AND NOW FOR A CHANGE OF PACE, FANDOMS WHOSE SHOWS I HAVE ACTUALLY WATCHED. this is a blatant lie I have not watched White Collar past the pilot.

It's not that I don't have enough recs for each of these fandoms to make 12 recs, but it's more -- I'm not as crazy in love with these fandoms as I used to be? ALTHOUGH THIS IS STILL VERY MUCH CRAZY IN LOVE, just. Not as big as the first three I did.

YOU CAN CHANGE THIS BY RECCING ME STUFF. I am very easily persuaded.

4.
Where Water and Steel Collide | soundingsea
Mac/Veronica, PG-13, 1400 words

You know, technically, I think this is actually more gen than it is Mac/Veronica, but whatever, I am not saying no to a femmeslash tag, there is not nearly enough of it.

An AU for Not Pictured, in which Logan dies on top of the Grand with Beaver, and Veronica wraps Mac in a bathrobe and they flee California. I have a very, very soft spot for the Bonnie-and-Clyde, criminals-on-the-run plot, and I'm pretty sure it stems from this fandom and this fic.

3.
12 Rolls of Film | sinaddict
Lilly/Duncan/Veronica/Logan, NC-17, 7000 words

For the life of me, I'm not quite sure I can pick just one thing about this fic that keeps me coming back to it. And before you all point and go, "incest!", yes, I realize that, but I was into Veronica Mars before I think any kind of alternate shipping occurred to me, much less incest (I shipped Logan/Veronica, okay, no shame. I even called it LoVe okay that part I'm shamed about I THOUGHT IT WAS CLEVER WHEN I WAS FIFTEEN OKAY.)

In my head, this is the photography fic. Lilly, Veronica, Duncan, and Logan all see the world through different lenses, different colors of film, different shutter speed, and sinaddict weaves her knowledge of cameras seamlessly into her gritty, gin-and-tonic bitter narrative. This fic is all about self-destruction, which Veronica Mars does so well.

2.
The Other Shoe Dropping | sadiekate
Veronica/Logan, PG-13, 3000 words

Speaking of Logan/Veronica, though, this is my favorite, in that I still sometimes quote lines from it. Short but surprisingly compact: an entire story told in an effectively impactful way. It features weddings on Halloween, adultery, and nothing being exactly what it looks like on the surface: it's my favorite kind of twisty, knotty, tangled take on Veronica and Logan.

1.
ned nickerson was never a romantic | falseeyelashes
Piz/Veronica, Veronica/Logan, PG-13, 2000 words

The first time I read this fic, I'm pretty sure I could literally feel it shifting my world views, although to be fair, I did watch Veronica Mars at a very formative time in my life, and the fic definitely helped.

This fic is all clever anecdotes and references to cool-people literature, music that isn't as cool if it's not vinyl, and basically is just Piz being heart-warming, heartbreaking, and utterly fabulous character all at once, and that's why this gets the distinction as my favorite Veronica Mars fic of all time.

Line: He’s still making shit for money. It’s the American dream, man.

4.
Recreational Flirting by china_shop
Neal/Peter/Elizabeth, NC-17, 6400 words

This is here because I couldn't make a White Collar rec list and not include china_shop, she practically pioneered the OT3 in this fandom, although tbh, for the people I've talked to, they either love her or hate her. I'm amongst the former.

Recreational Flirting won out over Undercover and the ever-incredible, ever-long epic of Reasonable Doubt because it, to me, best chapters the basic elemental draw of what makes Neal/Peter/Elizabeth so believable.

Also, it includes Elizabeth wearing Neal's fedora, which will never not be hot.

3.
Boundary Conditions by fahye and lizardspots
Neal/Peter/Elizabeth, NC-17, 6300 words

Speaking of Elizabeth wearing Neal's fedora, here is the art-and-fic (ficillustration?) that first introduced me to White Collar (again, I blame bookshop, she tells us to look at OT3 art by lizardspots from a fandom I've never heard of and I immediately do it.)

The combination of lizardspots's art and fahye's writing is lethal. I didn't even know the characters and it made me feel ~feelings.~

In it, Neal and Peter have subtext and Elizabeth and Peter have text, and then there's some surprise!d/s and then Peter takes Neal home to Elizabeth as a birthday gift.

2.
Martyrs Never Last This Long by out_there
Mozzie, Neal/Peter/Elizabeth, R, 20000 words

Characters written into shows purely to be convenient sources of exposition but double as comedic relief tend to become cult favorites. Mozzie is the universally well-liked paranoid conspiracy theorist, and this fic is all from his POV: when Kate comes back to town, Mozzie has to make a choice: having the inconstant halycon days of old, or turning to the Suit he hates so much for help.

Long, plotty, stunningly-detailed, this fic has everything I adore: Mozzie being awesome and the OT3 being OT3.

1.
Jeffrey Nueller's 'Man With Fedora' by copperbadge
genfic, PG

YES THAT'S RIGHT, the genfic won over everything shippy, and I don't even mind, because Man With Fedora is publishable, printable, sellable, completely as it is; it reads like the best kind of literature, the kind you'll dog-ear and take with you on trips to the beach and let yellow on your bookshelves for your kids to find years down the road.

It incorporates an impressive use of multimedia (this fic has its own wiki page, guys) and an extensive knowledge of art history, and deals some of the best character dynamics in the whole of the White Collar fandom: you will love Neal in this and love Peter in this and by the end, you won't even know what to do with them, and the psychotic creepypasta painter, oh my god, that scene!

It is an absolutely fabulous read.

4.
Ten Lessons the Doctor Learned From Sex and One He Didn't by misscam
Ten/Rose, R

So back when I was young and floundering around and not quite sure how one went about finding good fanfiction on this strange, foreign Internet thing, someone kindly pointed me to some of misscam's early DW stuff, and since this was right after season 1 of Doctor Who aired in America, I was head over heels.

I knew I needed to include her on this list, since she remains one of the only people I friended for fic first before coming to adore them as a person, but it took me way too long to try and pick a favorite -- she is crazy prolific.

I went with this one because a) who doesn't like four/five/ten things fics, and you have to admit that's a pretty catchy title and b) it includes a lot of references to Old Who, which is always kind of, oh, Doctor, inducing.

3.
Vita Longa by copperbadge
Amy/Eleven/Rory, PG-13

Yeah, no, after I read this fic, I was kind of like, "I think I've been spoiled for every season five fic I will ever read, how can you honestly get better than this? Doctor Who OT3 of my heart and copperbadge? NOPE FOREVER RUINED."

Rufus Atius Ferox remembers two childhoods: one of them is Rory William's.

2.
Maturity by orange_crushed
Rose/Ten II, PG-13

This fic is the perfect, funny, feel-good fic. No, it really really is. Does that mean this is schmoop? idk it might be, but mostly I just call it awesome. It's the cure for the angst that the season four finale put us all through.

In which the other-Doctor and Rose grow old together and still go about trying to stop alien invasions, albeit in orthopedic shoes.

1.
18 Seconds by katemonkey
Nine, Rose, G

No matter how awesome Doctor Who and the fiction written for it continues to be, this fic will always have that honorary place in my heart as Favorite Ever. It successfully captures everything I couldn't put into words, regarding everything I fell in love with when my mom called me into the living room to watch Doctor Who with her when it first aired: the magic and wonder and creative possibility of traveling in time and space.

This is the story of what adventures the Doctor had in the 18 seconds he was gone in Rose, before popping back in to be all, "did I also mention it travels in time?"

Please note that this is not a comprehensive list: I have NOT read every single fic on the Internet, so if there's a fic you adore for any of these fandoms that you think would belong on this list, please please PLEASE rec it to me :DD

(YOU KNOW WHAT I NEED, THOUGH? Season five stuff from Doctor Who. I am woefully lacking Eleven on my delicious, I need to change this.)
