Since CP came to the publishing world and popularized himself as a homeschooled, published literature prodigy, I've been interested in how homeschooling works. I haven't seen much people been homeschooled, so the idea is pretty new to me. I'm interested in your views and experiences in homeschooling, and how it differs from public schools. So, first off, let me just say that my personal opinion is that homeschooling definitely has a place. School started fine for me, even though my dad's job meant we had to move lots. I was popular and all the subjects were easy. Then, in 2004, we moved again. For a couple of years, my grades in maths and science had been slipping significantly. My mum is a brilliantly clever academic, and intelligence -- never personal appearance or popularity -- had always been emphasised as one of the highest markers for self-worth alongside kindness and ambition. (Damn, we're such Slytherins...) Unfortunately for me, science and maths were never my interests, which were more art and drama and creative writing. Also unfortunately for me, unlike my mother, I was well-liked and had many friends. Don't ask me how, but because my mother is an socially-reclusive Aspie who always made it clear that success is not measured by the amount of friends one has, having any friends at all became bizarrely shameful for me, though that was NEVER the intention of her ( ... )

I don't mind long posts as long as they mean what they're trying to convey.

School was boring and easy, so starting in fourth grade my mom taught me at home out of school textbooks and other publications she thought applicable (eg. Carl Sagan's Cosmos or whatever). I took standardized tests at home under my mom's supervision. My grades turned out pretty amazing - until the end when some real life family messiness started interfering, but whatever.

For eight years I avoided having to deal with assholes during my insecure teenage years, met friends through library clubs and sports, took SATs at the local high school, went to what would've been my prom with local friends, and then was lucky enough to go to a really good uni. \o/

Not recommended for parents who can't teach, kids who have messy home lives that school helps them escape, kids and parents with no academic self-discipline, and kids who struggle with solitude or self-entertainment.

I've been scrolling through this site for a while. It's been incredibly entertaining. Since I was homeschooled, I finally thought I'd give a post a go (further cementing the image that us homeschoolers are anti-social), ha ( ... )
