Sunday was gorgeous here (pushing 70 degrees!) so we decided to get out for our first real training ride of the season. We were both guessing we'd do 30 miles, maybe 40, but wound up doing 50! We went from Redmond right into downtown Seattle and back. It was a great ride (albeit a bit far!), and I was able to help somebody with a broken chain ( Read more... )

do you have any good book recommendations that are more contemporary? I have exhausted my list, and as you posted for once, and since I remember that you read Ishmael and a lot of other good books I've read, I figured I'd ask. Anything you can think of that is slightly, but not overbearingly sci-fi with tidbits of insightful philosophy that is not by Orson Scott Card? Or anything innovative really.... excuse the randomness. :)

Hey! Sorry, I totally didn't see your comment until now. I haven't read any sci-fi recently, only non-fiction stuff. Hm...slightly sci-fi with tidbits of insightful philosophy? I read a few books by a guy named James Halperin last year that might fall into that category. One is called The Truth Machine, about what would happen to the world in the near future if there was a machine that could prove whether anybody was telling the truth. It's pretty interesting, and a quick read. The other one is kind of a sequel (at least it takes place afterwards in the same world) and it's called The First Immortal. It's about cryogenics. I think the first book is better, but they were both interesting and entertaining.

I also read a few books by Cory Doctorow last year, an up-and-coming sci-fi writer. His writing is great, love the style, and it's not heavy-duty sci-fi at all. As for philosophy, not so much, but it's good stuff. :)

I had to pop in... for some reason I was surfing around LJ and I thought of you and wanted to see how you were. :) I am glad to hear that all seems to be good - congrats on the new house!

We are in the process if selling ours and upgrading to a bigger place... we have kind of outgrown the "starter" house.
