As some of you may know, a county in Virginia recently started racially profiling Latinos and requiring people to prove their legal status in the U.S. This has proven to be very damaging to the local community, and very expensive for the county government, as so much time and energy was devoted to this endeavor. This recent law and its policies are really sad. As a "border region" this area has a reputation for being comparatively right-wing when compared to the rest of northern Virginia, so it really came as no surprise.

The interesting thing about the situation is that these laws have brought a lot of repressed feelings to the surface, so there is an opportunity here for dialogue.
