By now I'm in danger of getting it more often wrong in German. Apostrophes are more common in English and I've been writing relatively much in English in recent years. So I caught myself a couple of times using them too generously in German. :)

It's when they're used to denote a plural, rather than a contraction (of two words) that I find utterly baffling. A good example of a very common error is when a decade is being referenced, e.g. "the 80's". Even as a contraction of "the 1980s", the position of the apostrophe makes no sense at all!
