Even the trees are suspicious, wary of any secrets that may escape their entangled roots. At thirteen, she is naïve and wide-eyed, but just old enough to think she can escape the boundaries laid down by Jacob’s decreeing words, deep in the jungle without any repercussions.
And then she meets her.
I do not have a name, the woman says. She wreaks of ash.
That’s silly, Ilana retorts. Everyone has a name.
At thirty, she hangs onto Jacob’s every word like the gospel. Returning to her old sanctuary, they meet again, but she knows better now.
Back again, I see.
Not for you, she snaps.
