Title: we cover our lies with smiles
Characters/Parings: Alex/Boone, mentions of Ben and Danielle.
Rating: PG
Words: 409
Summary: She doesn't know why she does it. For snowweisz.

It begins with a sandwich (and sometimes even soup, if he’s lucky) and ends with a smile.

Her father (Ben, she coldly corrects herself) has her arranged to bring Carlyle three meals a day, but she always sneaks in a few words before the guards outside grow too suspicious.

She doesn’t know why she does it -- maybe it’s to keep her mind off Karl, maybe it’s to punish herself because of the fiery temper that had caused her to tell Ben that she wishes he was dead and buried.

What’s it like? She musters up the courage one day to ask, Out there?

What? He answers, voice half-muffled by the grilled cheese he was scarfing down. You mean from where I came from? Nothing special, just a bunch of hungry --

No, I mean, out there. Not on this island.

Oh. He looks down at his plate again and swallows. Why? What do you wanna know?

I dunno, I just -- she stops herself mid-sentence and sighs. She concentrates on the mud on her shoe to keep from answering.

You’ve never left this place, have you, Alex? This is the first time he ever uses her name and a large lump forms in her throat.

She simply shakes her head and does her best to ignore the tears that are beginning to blur her vision.

That -- he pauses for a moment. He offers her a small smile and chuckles. That sucks.

Alex laughs and sniffs loudly, wiping her watery eyes with the sleeve of her jacket. Yeah, she manages to answer, Yeah, it does. She looks at her watch and realizes she’s spent much longer in here than originally intended -- she takes his plate and bolts the door behind her, giving a small nod to the two armed men outside.

When she walks down the dark corridor, the sound of his laugh buries itself into the pit of her stomach, forming a warm feeling she’s unused to. As she pushes open the exit, she smiles as the sunlight stings her itchy eyes and takes a deep breath of fresh air.

The warmth still remains, even when she finds Karl again, even when her mother touches her face for the first time in sixteen years, even when a gun is being pointed at her father’s head by one of the very people Boone’s apart of -- and it will always remain.
