November Rain and Lightning Crashes

Mary Chase would always remember the exact moment she fell in love with Sam Winchester. Or, as everyone else would come to know him, Sam Campbell.
It was the very first time she met him - eighteen year old, lost-looking little boy that he was. Not that Sam was ever little. He'd towered over Mary even back then.
With a shy smile, those adorable dimples showing - "My mother's name was Mary," he'd said. And from that moment on, Mary's heart belonged to him.
It did seem, however, that stealing hearts ran in the family for the Winchesters. Mary's best friend - the girl next door, as it happens - lost hers to Dean pretty quickly.
Mary didn't blame Sue any, either. No female was immune to Dean's charms. He was like an older brother to Mary, but not so much that Mary didn't stare at his ass in those tight jeans right along with Sue, when he was bent over the hood of a car. Or that she didn't also get a little weak in the knees when he flashed that cocky grin.
Frankly, the only thing that kept Mary from also falling head over heels for Dean, was the fact that she WAS already head over heels...with his little brother.
Though both brothers remained oblivious to how the girls really felt about them through the years.
Then the bombshell dropped. A little after Sam turned 20, he announced that he was leaving - going to college. Sam and Mary had become very close friends, but Sam didn't realize he was breaking up more than a special friendship for Mary - he was breaking her heart.
The only person who truly saw how hurt Dean also was by his brother leaving, was Sue. For despite the fact that they weren't as close as Sam and Mary, Sue knew Dean. She saw the signs of his pain at being abandoned by the only family he had left.
For three years, Sue watched the two people she loved most in the world go through various turmoils - due to the one other person in the world the two of them loved most.
Then, just like that, everything changed once more. When Sam came back.

To say that it was the biggest shock of her life, was an understatement. When Mary opened the door, to find Sam standing there. Sam, who she hadn't seen in three years.
Three long years, and the only thing that managed to register in her mind, was...tall. He was so TALL. Big. Overwhelming. Well, THAT hadn't changed in three years. Sam still left her breathless.
Only, it was different - HE was different. Had he really gotten even taller? And, God - he was just so...BIG.
"Mare? Oh my...God, Mare - look at you. You...wow..."
Oh, yes - of course. He wasn't the only one who'd changed. Mary shrugged, smiling and blushing. "Uh - yeah. There's a lot less of me, huh?"
Sam nodded. "You can say that again. You look great!"
And with that, he pulled her into a hug. Mary thought her heart would give out.
She closed her eyes. Three years. She'd worked SO hard during all that time. First to lose all that weight, which she'd accomplished. Heck, she'd done it much more successfully than she ever could have hoped.
Though the weight in her heart hadn't been so easy to lose. It had gotten lighter with time, sure, but it had never completely gone away.
And now, here he was - holding her in those strong arms, and Mary felt it weighing her down all over again.
Sam Winchester was back, and with just one look, Mary was in love all over again.

"Well, I'll be damned - look who's back." Dean smiled, and pulled his brother into a hug.
Mary raised her eyebrows. "Good God..." she muttered, shaking her head.
Sue frowned at her. "What?"
Mary gestured towards the boys. "Just...look at him. He's..."
"Huge?"
Mary nodded vehemently.
Dean seemed to think so too, punching his NOT so little brother on the shoulder. "How tall are you now, anyway?"
Sam shrugged, looking a little embarrassed. "Six foot four,I think?"
"Wow. And this? Just look at these..." Dean bumped his fist against Sam's bicep. "How much you bench pressing?" The brothers launched into their own little world, Sue and Mary just quietly watching as they re-united.
"So, when're you planning on, y'know - going back?" Dean queried after some time. Sam looked down, suddenly awkward.
He scratched his head. "I, uh - I'm not... going back, Dean."
Dean looked taken aback. "You...what? Sammy, you're not telling me...? Did you...? You...dropped out of Stanford?"
Now Sam looked kind of like the boy Mary use to know - awkward and a little nervous under his big brother's stern look. "Yeah," he answered finally, not meeting Dean's gaze.
Dean looked utterly astonished. "Why...would you do that?"
Sam just shrugged. "I just...it wasn't working out, alright? I...wanted to come home. 'S that a problem?"
"No - no, it's...fine, I just..." Dean shrugged, too, "I'm REALLY surprised, s'all."
Though Mary could tell, that Dean knew - just like she KNEW - there was more to the story.
Though for now, they were just happy to have Sam back.
