Scientists to Map Neanderthal's Genes

July 20, 2006 - U.S. and German scientists on Thursday launched a two-year project to decipher Neanderthals' genetic code, a feat that they hope will help deepen understanding of how modern humans' brains evolved.

There is some evidence to suggest that neanderthal's and homo sapiens mated, which caused the blonde haired/blue eyed gene in modern europeans. So it wouldn't be entirely irrelevant to ourselves.
