I have read Foregin Babes in Beijing and A Season in Red. I enjoyed the second book more as I gave a better all round view. Where Foregin Babes in Beijing I didn't finish. A Season in Red is actually written by a journalist and I felt she presented a bit more of a balanced view, or more of an insight into Chinese life.

It's a memoir, not an ethnography, but Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang is very good, and has some interesting stuff about Manchu family customs in the first section.
