I don't know how helpful this is, but La Brea woman was found with a domesticated dog. It's probably going to be difficult to find information on, though. Good luck!

The chihuahua was bred in pre-Columbian Mexico. I know that's outside of your geographic range but I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar breeds in the southwest.

Certainly there has to have been a lot of material written about the Eskimo / Inuit / husky breeds of dogs.

There is an effort underway by breeders to 'recreate' the "Native American Indian Dog" as a breed, in theory the common one domesticated in North America prior to white settlement. But there's a lot of mixed information out there, so you may not have much luck on finding the scientific veracity of it.

Good luck! I'd like to see what you find.

LOL as someone who shows dogs (agility and confirmation) yah I know the Chi was bred in Northern Mexico... Our book talks about the Chihuahua mountains and the providence so I bet I could include it...

I will be looking at my zillions of dog books for stuff too :)

Oh you bet I'll share

There's probably something about them in The Broken Spears. I know conquistadors loved using dogs in war.

except I can't use anything that they wrote unless they wrote it while in North America. We're not covering anything basically south of the US border

Thanks so much though for trying to help! One of the books I do have does talk about dogs in the Maya and and Inca but unfortunately I can't use south of the US border (though I can use Canada *head shake at her professor*)
