'To what point and purpose, young missy?'

Feb 01, 2007 00:31

The weather today was absolutely glorious - crisp and clear and somehow pale in that peculiar wintry way that makes everything seem very alive. The frost glittered on the grass as I walked to school, and the air felt fresh and clean ( Read more... )

Ah, winter in the northern hemisphere sounds beautiful. All we get down here is mushy, cold wind and rain. (and bushfires in summer! :P)

We usually get the less-fun bits as wel, in far greater quantities to the nce bits - and, really it's quite worrying that we haven't. Global warming, here we come... :|

Furthermore, even if they have a quality in common, doesn't necessarily mean they must both have another quality as well (in this case, a creator).

Exactly. :D Just because a (round) football will bounce if yuo drop it from, say, head-hieght it doesn't necessarily follow that an equally round cannonball would do too.

The idea of the alien creator-species made me laugh - but logically there's no reason why we should veiw that as being any less logical than the existence of God - or possibly, on some levels moreso, as they could at least have a motive...

(Although it doesn't deal with the crucial question of why the universe is here in the first place, but maybe they were all channeling Bertrand Russel...)

Dawkins is rather good, although I've yet to read The Blind Watchmaker - really should, though.

Oh, and I think you mean 'chance' rather than 'change' in 1)

I've only read The God Delusion, sadly, although I've been promised photocopies of The Blind Watchmaker by my wonderful philosophy teacher. He's great fun to read, but unfortunately citing him tends to invariably lead to someone saying 'Oh, that Mr Dawkins, he's so rude...' :P

Ah. Yes. Gotcha. Thanks. :-)

Yeah, I never really was a fan of the teleological argument. It's just based on such a pre-scientific world view. Paley, and John Hick as well, really do attempt to create this weird sort of religious proto-science that is far too specific and doesn't really make much sense. There's actually no need to create this almost mythological world view to combat science, in my humble opinion theologians and philosophers of religion could be talking about far more interesting things.
