Ships and Snow

Nov 28, 2010 19:38

We have snow. Lots of it! So earlier today I took a walk down to the tall ship Glenlee which was supposed to be open to the public for the first time since refurbishment earlier this summer. I thought she would look pretty in the snow :)

Gorgeous, and serene. I do love new snow. No snow here yet. Next few weeks, would be usual.

It was very serene. It was so quiet and still down by the river there in the snow. Beautiful :)

She's a very pretty ship! The "gun ports" are just painted on btw. Glenlee was built as a "Cape Horner" in 1896 and never carried guns to my knowledge. However it's my understanding that the "gun ports" are an original feature designed to give the impression the ship was armed.

As I understand it, painted gun ports were quite common on merchantmen through much of the AOS. Earlier on, in Hornblower's time, commercial vessels were likely to be armed.

PS Our snow is still here and more expected overnight.

Yes, I think you're right and I have to say the painted ports do look very effective!

We have had no more snow since Sunday but we got enough over the weekend to have great fun sledging and building snowmen!

Lovely!! We've had snow too, but not enough to cover all the miserable grey… :/ We may get more today.
*makes us some hot punch*
Let's hope we get a white christmas!

It's very, very unusual for us to have snow in November. In fact we don't get much snow on the West Coast of Scotland at all. Rain and howling gales are more normal for us! We made the most of it by building a huge snowman in the garden and going sledging in the park :)

Yes indeed! Cold middies with cold noses and freezing fingers. Need to warm them up somewhere! ;P
