You're right, I'd never really thought about that before. Particularly in the case of Archie, he inhabits the character so completely that I forget I'm watching an actor. But you're right the transformation is remarkable and, in this case, heartbreaking.

Perhaps he is just inhabiting Archie in the moment. That is the most simple explanation. But I have heard that actors hoard painful moments to use when needed sometimes. I should not wonder, and even if I dared ask and could it may not be something a person could explain. But I do wonder.

That is the alchemy of acting I guess- I wonder if it changes through life also = I mean whatever Jamie did when he was this young man fresh from drama school might well be different now he is a husband, father, friend of long standing = it is all the more heart wrenching that expression when you do think of his open, smiling face as himself in interviews and conferences.
