I am not a real fan of Hornblower/Kennedy, but this was very good, and your Hornblower/Bush was just lovely.
Thanks.

Now I feel cold myself... *shivers*

Awww to the last line: ...and eyes like summer. Remind me to read the books and watch all episodes again. Well done you!

Thanks you! Sorry to make you cold though. This isn't very seasonal is it? :}

Remind me to read the books and watch all episodes again.

Dear amaraal,

Please remember to read all the Hornblower books and watch all the Hornblower episode again. Many thanks.

Yours sincerely,

A very realistic portrayal of poverty and the quiet desperation that accompanies it.

Horatio is an ungrateful so and so though, Maria deserved better.

Thank you. I must admit I am fascinated by this period of the bookverse canon. The whole Long Rooms scene is just so unbelievably seedy and the fact that Hornblower is so pathetically grateful to be there makes my skin crawl.

And yes, Maria did deserve better. Much better.

There is something so pitifully sad about Maria and Horatio standing in the narrow corridor, leaning against the faded wallpaper, assuring each other that they get cold at night. Then the two of them curl up, and shiver until morning.

This is so lonely and cold. I may need to write an antidote. Let me put my thoughts to that...

I'm sorry this is so sad and cold, though not without a glimmer of hope, I hope! One of the things that pains me most about Hornblower and Maria's relationship is that he is never honest with her. But he is never honest with himself, so how could he be?

I may need to write an antidote. Let me put my thoughts to that...
Oh please do! I actually started writing this months and months ago. I don't know if you remember, but you said you wondered what had happened to the silver razor? This is what happened to it. There's one more part yet, I haven't started writing it, but I know how it goes.

I do remember. It began with Archie's father, he was a youngest son, and the razor came down to him that way. I remember Archie was on Justinian, and his father sent it, and then he had to go out and buy a new one. I remember-- but maybe I should read the series over, just to be sure...

The whole series is tagged here - The Silver Razor. I would never have written more than a single entry if you hadn't asked what happened to the razor :)

How close the cold feels - we have seen Portsmouth more in the sun than the chill but enough to imagine those poor frozen fingers and numb body.
And the piled on pain of unwanted kindness even when desperation lurks at the door -that is a fine paragaraph about the women and their aspirations.
as is the whole build up round the razor and how it could do much good.
Horatio's stiff necked but moving attempt to honour Archie's grace is just so well portrayed
SOmetimes it is just that way - going on because that is all you can do but with just that thin thread that is hopeful.
a welcome return of a finely balanced story.
Lovely to return to lj from holiday with - becuase I am in thoughtful mode anyway.

Sorry, this wasn't a very cheerful story to come back from holiday to but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

And the piled on pain of unwanted kindness even when desperation lurks at the door -that is a fine paragraph about the women and their aspirations.
I always feel so badly for Maria and her lot. It's almost impossible to imagine how tough it must have been for the women who spent their lives in these port towns.

Sometimes it is just that way - going on because that is all you can do
Thank you. I think Horatio is at his lowest here, consumed by recrimination and regret. The love and hope is still there, but it's buried deep. He'll remember it again before the end though.
