Georgian Garlieston

Back in September when we went camping down in Galloway I went to visit a tiny little town called Garlieston, where one of the Indefatigable's midshipmen John McKerlie lived for some time after the left the navy at the end of the Napoleonic wars. The day I visited I was lucky enough to catch a guided walk by historian Lucy Inglis, on the Georgian ( Read more... )

It looks lovely. There is a clarity to the air that I see in many of your photos.

Even if the buildings have changed, he might still know the shape of the harbor, the sound of the birds, the smell of the ocean.

I especially like the old photo of the boat builders. They look like capable guys don't they? I especially like the one in the back, who is sitting. He got to stop work a moment to have his picture taken.

That's the light of the West Coast. It's particularly noticeable the further north you go.

Oh yes, I'm sure all these things would be instantly familiar. I walked right out to the end of the harbour breakwater and looked out to sea, wondering if he'd stood there himself.

How wonderful. I have a feeling we may have visited there when we stayed at Newton Stewart...

There are lots of lovely little fishing ports all around the Machars Peninsula. It's a gorgeous part of the world :)

Thanks! It was really hard to take decent pictures as it was so bright, most of my snaps were completely overexposed!

I love the various styles of houses in the Crescent.
Although the town was planned and the plots sold in the 1790s, many of them weren't built on until some time later, hence the mishmash of architectural styles.

I particularly like the mill and the street of old houses. The atmosphere inviting to a walk. ^^
