I too don't see the "Grr, girl power" aspect of activating all the potentials. It's sticky, it has consequences and somehow, I just don't see Joss addressing those. If he does, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I think the problems with activated Potentials might not be evident right away. Give those girls a few days or weeks to figure out what's going on. More cases of psychotic breaks? Definitely. Girls drunk on power like Faith was? Dude, teenaged girls are many things, but "mature" is by definition usually not one of them. Messy, oh yes.

I agree with Liz Marcs' third point as well. And yours: Slayer power was a ticket to pain, suffering and an early death. But, what makes Buffy a hero to me is that even though her life sucks and she's in agony, she keeps fighting every day to keep the world and herself going. That's the empowering feminist message. All life is suffering, and women suffer even more, yet look how strong they can be in the face of adversity. That's one of the reasons I have no patience for all the whining Xander, Willow and Giles do about Buffy being so self-involved. They should probably never be forgiven for kicking her out of the house. The woman had a really difficult life, and still she kept working hard and continued to maintain a pretty positive attitude. I would have thrown myself off that tower too. And a lot sooner. (As you can see, I am not a superhero like Buffy.)

Totally: all the bravery and heroism is in choosing to accept the fate and do the best we can. (Giles' story mirrors Buffy's here.) One of the horrors in Buffy's resurrection, for me, is that her fight was over. She'd gone to a rest and a reward and... sorry! nope! fight some more! only this time in total depression. Ugh. Poor kid.

I love Buffy best in "Prophecy Girl" for that reason. Seriously. I have two moments of utter gushing love for Buffy in the series. They're in the Season 1 opener, when she chooses to befriend Willow, and in the season 1 closer, when she goes to fight the Master despite knowing she'll die.

Okay, I have other moments of Buffy love, but those are the most intense for me.

Resurrected and abandoned by that rat Giles. That's why I love Breathing so much. And that sappy-titled Rari story, Love Heals All. They fill my need to fix that travesty. You give a reason I can believe and accept as legit. And Rari provides the schmoop.

I'm not sure Buffy choosing Willow makes me gush. A little condescending? But going to fight the Master is definite superhero-ness at its best. I have a million favorite Buffy moments.

See, I think Buffy choosing to be friends with Willow is an important moment in establishing her character. There's a little nose thing she does when Cordelia is mean to Willow that shows where her sympathies are. Then she goes off and chooses not to be popular. I swear, when I was watching the show for the first time, that was totally the moment where I fell for Buffy. I was on her side from then on.

I started losing sympathy with her in season 4. Regained it in S5. Never really reconnected with her fully through S6 & 7.
