I have since come to realize that the malfunction was due to a system update. Why the patch had this sort of effect is still a mystery, however.

It was. I was forced to participate. A friend of mine signed me up for the event without my consent and due to the lack of... competitors, I was not allowed to withdraw from the pageant.
