No, they have simply been cloaked with an effect that makes them seem like constructs. The town's real target was our memories of these supposedly erased people.

I have evidence. These supposed constructs behave almost exactly like the originals. They also profess to share the originals' opinions. They retain the powers of the original, unlike other dopplegangers that the town creates. Not only that, but they are also willing to help attack the town's infrastructure, as seen in the attack on the diary. They can also be droned and then snap out of it, like other sentient beings in Mayfield. All this leads me to believe that the only thing truly being tampered with is our memories.
