Kept on reading, though, because it was so evocative of those family vacation when I'd grown just old enough to be cranky and resentful throughout them all. (Lovely years, huh? When we can't actually appreciate a vacation?)
hee, that's ok, they only ever call him Kishimoto in the series, i think, anyway, so. so glad you enjoyed it, and it brought back... memories! ^_~ and glad you liked the grandfather.

You got the characters spot on, because Tezuka would be a stodgy, stoic kid, and Yukimura and Sanada would be attached by the hip from the start. Poor Sanada, so much money on a high-maintenance boyfriend.
I found Kaoru immature in a refreshing way, you only see him a few times in the manga, and he seems so much like Tezuka then, it's kinda funny to see what he's like as a child. Minor characters ftw.
hee, i've been meaning to do a "kishimoto-is-tezuka's-cousin" fic for AGES. i PLANNED one when they were in their teens, but... ^_~

Tezuka hasn't met Fuji yet! though, assuming they're in Chiba near Rokkakuchu, Fuji is probably NEAR them... ^_~
I loved the contrast between Kaoru and Kunimitsu, and was tremendously amused when Sanada and Yukimura showed up. Kaoru's narrative read very true to me as a fairly typical little boy, and even though he's such a minor character (I had to google him, I'll admit), your pacing and style kept me reading very nicely.
I especially enjoyed the ending. Yukimura and Sanada getting all impatient with their failure! Yukimura being pretty one moment and dangerously competitive the next! Tezuka nailing the shot, and with style! A drop shot, no less! And Kaoru's joy! It was all very ♥.
The cousin thing is perfect. PERFECT. They're so much alike when they're teens it's painful. I spent a lot of this wanting to smack Kishimoto upside the head, but I think that was intentional. :P Also his comments about destiny make it even more heartbreaking that he quits later. *squishes him*
