the logical next step

Well, now I've made the resolution to get on this Yen Press manga thing, it comes down to what the hell do I do for a comic. Obviously, adaptation is needed, since a lot of my concepts are for really long things that don't fit into 32 pages, but that's where excerpts/pilots come in, right? This post is for me throwing in ideas for how to use bits ( Read more... )

A lot of those sound distinctly episodic. I recommend NOT doing an origin story. Do an episode from later in the adventures of one of those. Look at a lot of the great shounen mangas--they usually start with an episode, with the backstory mentioned. (FMA is a perfect example.)

Overworld sounds like it would work for that, or Terminus, or Izumo.

What you really want here is to stand out from the pack. Get noticed. So I would pick whichever of these you feel is the most original, most interesting, most unorthodox, and go with that. I can't really tell from such brief summaries, but Arcana Game sounds pretty interesting. (Everyone loves flying castles!)

Just my two cents! :D

I agree on not starting at an origin point; if you jump right into an established story and characters at a point that makes sense, you can build suspense for the readers as to HOW they got there (and the adventures or backstory leading up to it). Also agreeing on Terminus and Overworld, but I think Arcana Game could work too for that sort of jumping-in adventure.

Personally, I'm leaning most towards Stiffs, since SO MANY people will try to do a fantasy-inspired piece, that a mystery series could really stand out among all the submissions. But how well it works will depend a lot on panel layout and pacing, so I'd research by watching some crime dramas and looking up other crime/mystery comics. Chew is a fun comic series, and The Surrogates is a good example of how to build drama. But main point is to have fun with it, so just pick what feels like the most fun for you and can best showcase your strengths ( ... )
