html how to: format italics, bold and underline in word documents

Aug 31, 2011 12:10

I first learned this trick a few years ago in a comment on svilleficrecs journal, and it's been an awesome time saver ever since. Call it the "how to format a fic for posting in less than 30 seconds no matter the story length or amount of formatting" trick.

For OpenOffice:

Go to Find/Replace, choose More Options and tick 'Regular Expressions'.

Put the cursor in the 'Find' box, and then choose Format, Font, and Italic. Click OK, and still in the 'Find' box, type (.*) WITH the brackets.

In the 'Replace' box, type &.

Replace All (you might have to click twice, I'm not sure why.)

Etc voila, you should have html tags around your italics! Can do the same for bold and underline, just select the appropriate thing in Format > Font.

I only discovered this recently but omg is it awesome! Feel free to pass on, I know it's making my life a hell of a lot easier.

Argh, the fourth line there should read:

In the 'Replace' box, type < i >&< /i > - taking out the spaces, obviously.

Stupid html actually working in a comment!
