Guh. That was just...lovely.
As usual I love your Jack voice it's really in character, and I think his reactions to Jonas are really well played out in the fic.

The whole plot behind it really does come across as poignant ("...and, despite decades of military training, he has to stop himself from flinching because this week's crossword will get no reaction and...") and I love how the whole fic comes full-circle at the end, eg. comes back to somthing as simple as the hat. The real tragedy of the situation is too much for them to dwell on.

Am probably totally over-analysing here but you seem to narrow the scope of the fic at the beginning (the hat), then widen it out to their surroundings and situation, and then narrow it back down to the two of them again at the end which I personally think is really effective (does that make any sense? Probably not LOL.)

Regardless of my coherency, as usual I loved the fic (when don't I?) and was riveted from start to end.
