“’Cause when I close my eyes and drift away,
I think of you and everything’s okay,
I’m finally now believing.”
- “Two Is Better Than One” by Boys Like Girls ft. Taylor Swift

There was only so much a person could do before they began to lose hope. Before they began to realize their inevitable failure. Before they reached their breaking point, where everything was lost.

It was a truth that Rewind knew all too well, because he had been there on that precipice about to fall off the edge.

His search for Dominus was a long one and had been all consuming. Looking high and low for even a tiny scrap of information, a lead, anything that could possibly tell Rewind the fate of his friend. And when Rewind had run out of resources to search, he found new ones.

Finding recordings of executions and killings and going to the relinquishment centers wasn’t ideal, but it was something. And Rewind wasn’t sure what he dreaded more, finding Dominus dead in this new avenue of resources, or not finding his friend at all.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t, but Rewind was determined to find out what had become of Dominus, so he continued looking, no matter the possible outcome.

Ironically he was at a relinquishment clinic when Rewind had finally reached his breaking point. Where his hope had begun to leave him as he came up empty handed yet again, and he began to scream and yell in frustration, anguish, and simple utter, helplessness.

What good was he, if he couldn’t do something as simple as find the one who had done so much, not only for Rewind, but for his entire caste as well?

And then Chromedome had come in, following the sounds of Rewind’s screams, and tried to comfort Rewind, a complete stranger, thinking that Rewind was mourning for a friend. And Rewind had to admit that it did look like that, going over his own recordings of that orn, but the reality was even stranger, because Rewind was upset that he hadn’t found Dominus’ frame. Because Chromedome had gone to the relinquishment center to die and seemed to be trying to encourage someone else to live.

And Rewind could not figure out what was more morbid about that orn, that he had been devastated that he couldn’t find Dominus’ offlined frame there, or that morgue was where he met Chromedome, starting something that had become more special than anything else.

After that, they stuck together, and maybe it was leftover from Dominus’ disappearance, that he would be abandoned again, that Rewind checked up on where Chromedome was. And Chromedome, one of the best mechs there was, never mentioned it, he just held Rewind closer when the smaller mech needed it.

And slowly, Rewind’s hope began to renew itself, as he continued his search for Dominus, only this time Chromedome was there to help.

When Rodimus had announced the trip to find the Knights of Cybertron, Rewind knew what he wanted to do, that it would be another chance to look for Dominus. There wouldn’t have been another chance to go look around the universe like this anytime soon, but that wouldn’t matter if Chromedome didn’t want to go.

“Do you want to go with Rodimus?”

“You want to.”

“That’s not what I asked, Chromedome.”

“…”

“You can say no, you know. I’d understand, it’s been so long since we were last on Cybertron and all.”

“With the way it is now? C’mon, let’s go pack our things.”

“Thanks.”

“Don’t thank me yet, Rodimus is in charge, with Ultra Magnus, and then Drift as TIC, it’s gonna be a long trip.”

But that was fine, because Chromedome had wanted to go too, and as long as they were together, everything was going to be okay.
