Man, i didn't even know critisism was taking that route. My whole problem with the movie is that it's not at all original in it's plot. The world is beautiful and all, but I found the movie to be a little....boring? Predictible to be certain.
I'm sure I'll get the DVD if I have the chance/money, but it was not "the most amazing movie ever" to me. I was just a good movie.
I did enjoy the movie, don't get me wrong. And the part of me that likes happy endings was satisfied. But I guess when it comes to movies that really sit with me and make me look at the world differently, I want something...more?
Bah, I'm being weird. I think your reasons for liking the movie are fine. I guess I was just trying to give another point of view without putting down the movie. I'm probably failing horribly! Pandora IS really beautiful and it would be wonderful if something like that really existed. Much kudos to Cameron for thinking up such a beautiful world to begin with. I just wish the plot had had more substance so that I could enjoy it on multiple levels. It doesn't really deserve negative reviews, in my mind. It's a GOOD, solid movie. Considering how much money it made, I guess that's the sort of thing the general public likes, you know? Nothing wrong with that at all.
You aren't being weird and don't have to apologize. :) I lack the movie critic gene and was even capable of enjoying Deep Blue Sea (the idiots or whiners all got eaten, woo hoo!). Nothing wrong with wanting more, not at all. I could have enjoyed it even more if it had been more 'meaty' as well, but there you go.
i haven't gotten around to seeing it. i've been told i should, but i just can't muster the care enough to go. besides, i've already seen pocahontas, dances with wolves, AND the new world. and at least two of them were pretty good movies already, without the need for gratuitous special effects.
also, doesn't the "noble, superior native" thing kind of become patronizing after a certain point, especially when the story's written and directed by a white guy? just sayin'.
I did really enjoy Pocahontas, though I don't remember Dances with Wolves despite seeing it. You have a point with your last, when I move beyond the feel good, ass kicking elements. >_o
oh, they were saying "ferngully" too. there's this game we used to play when i worked at a video rental store called, "i liked it better when it was called ____." kept us on our toes for when we ran out of some movie -- we'd point the customers back to older (generally better) movies that were basically the same with different titles and different actors.
anyways, it's actually sort of strange that i have so little interest in seeing it. i generally enjoy a good jim cameron flick.
