It's the UC Berkeley Co-ops. Not that you have to be a UC Berkeley student to go, just a full-time student. But still. It's like dorms, kind of, but cheaper. There are about 50 people in one house, with a communal kitchen and living room/rec room area's, and bathrooms. It's self-maintained, so the people living there take care of it.
So, that's what they are.
