Yup, been there, been that student. BTW, this is Sothe, or I used to be that on LJ anyway... I don't post on LJ much anymore, have moved on to Wordpress. Anyway, yes, I have been there. It took a particularly disagreeable teacher of writing who, after praising the other student's writing efforts, looked at me, held up my manuscript and said.. " I have no clue what to do with this, I am not even sure what this is." After that, something inside me just kind of snapped, and I thought to myself.. "If I want to be a writer, why am I taking classes, instead of writing.?"

Really, I have found most forms of class to be useless, and the only format which has really helped me develop at all, is a writer's group, but, you have to find a good one.. or, make your own.

BTW, good to see you on here again!!

those people are bullies
and are making hungry ghosts
they really should not be teaching.
I'd ask them do they really want to keep
their jobs and tell them they are doing malpractice.

refer the fledgling writers to
steven king and kurt vonnegut

scifi conventions used to be a great way to
spend time with writers,
they want to nurture each other

I think there's three types of people who end up teaching creative subjects. There's the ones who are teachers first, like an english teacher, they're trained in objectives and standards and all that. And all that history of educational philosophy is more about ranking and employment and data sets. It's good for producing workers and engineers and people who follow rules and regulations and there's a place in society for all that, but it's not the only place, and it's not a place for everyone. It's definitely not a creative and supportive place, as you well know ( ... )
