I am making you a legend
I hope you aren’t disappointed
By the disparity between poetry
And reality
I am making you a legend
Using your own words
In hopes they might inspire you
To live
Or love, whichever one you choose.
Picture me as Nausicaa
The Phaeacian princess
Yourself as brine-encrusted Odysseus
Trying to get home, home, home
(many scholars believe she
wrote The Odyssey)
Or picture me as Murasaki
To your Prince Genji
Writing with piercing psychological
Insight
I will make you a legend, but
This means we can never meet.
(Because you are not you
And I have never been good at separating
Fiction and reality)
See?
Already, there’s dramatic conflict.
