hello from the other side! (dreamwidth, that is)

Sep 03, 2010 11:41

Hey! I'm trying out crossposting from Dreamwidth. Augh, learning curve! So yes, anyway, I'm one of the 9000+ people who created new DW accounts on Wednesday. I haven't worked out yet how I'll use the two journals--for right now I don't plan to disappear from LJ, but depending on what they do about the Facebook/Twitter thing I might have to ( Read more... )

what is this fuckery?, dreamwidth, crossposts

I'm still not sure how this facebook thing works. Everyone on my F-list is doing the disclaimer thing but I just don't understand how the facebook linking is an issue? I mean, I don't have any friends on my F-list here that are also facebook friends and there's literally no connection between these two sites.

Well, there are lots of issues, and different people have different ones that concern them. My biggest ones are above--I don't trust Facebook with any of my information, and I worry about the potential for abuse that comes with opening up LJ to all Facebook users. Other people have much more stressful concerns, like stalkers, employers, and crazy relatives who could easily come across their journal if someone mistakenly crossposts a comment to FB or Twitter. Even on a locked post, the crosspost includes the url with your LJ name in it, the subject of the post, and the first paragraph of the comment, which may include confidential things ( ... )

I'm very curious to see what happens over at DW now that so many people are joining all at once. I really appreciate how easy they make it to use DW as your main home and crosspost to LJ--it's actually kind of amazing how simple it is.

I'll be leaving on vacation for two weeks in a couple of days, so I'm going to miss a lot--including, probably, LJ's response to the whole debacle, assuming they make one. I guess I'll keep an eye out once in a while when I'm taking a tea break! At least I'm glad to have started the process of switching over. When I get back, then I'll start looking for comms and new friends that aren't LJ crossovers. Something new--this could be more fun than it looks?

Hi, on Dreamwidth I'm Amalthia and I crosspost to LJ and DW but my paid for account is at Dreamwidth so if you want to add me to your circle there and unfriend me here that is a-okay in my book. :)

Yeah, the privacy issues coming here really suck. I don't post anything that I'm seriously ashamed of (because most things I do post as public) but there is a lot of nerdy information on me that I don't necessarily want to share with my 300+ FB friends.

Zuckerberg is truly evil. There are so many websites I go to now that automatically synch with my FB account and it is disturbing.

There is a group that is trying to get a new social media site like FB off the ground so maybe when that happens I'll migrate. Unfortunately FB is a great way to stay in touch. I also don't bother to make my information private so that I always keep in mind that I shouldn't post anything I'm ashamed of.

My concerns aren't so much shame as privacy and tolling, but there are definitely a lot of people on here who have more to lose from friends or family in RL coming across their LJ. I'm an adult, nobody cares--although I wouldn't want an employer or coworker coming across my fic, not because it's shameful but because, as with anything that's not a complete whitebread mainstream activity, you just don't know what kind of response you're going to get. I don't intend to find out via Facebook digging through my personal information and "suggesting" my LJ as reading material for the other owners in my condo building, the same way FB constantly suggests them to me as people I should add to my Friends list. Do Not Want!

Well, in the end the people who actually care about me wouldn't care about my LJ (or probably know about it already). And eeee I definitely wouldn't want FB suggesting my LJ as reading material to strangers though, that would be so weird.

The biggest problem in all of this for me is I'm still unemployed so I have to worry about my appearence on FB a little more.
