To keep my mind occupied during long stretches of mindless sewing on current project, I've been watching Star Trek TOS on my iPod. Such is the extent of mindless-sewingness that I got through the entire second season between July 2nd and yesterday, and am already 4 episodes into Season 3

And then there's the prison scene, right, right? I watched that for the first time last year and I'm all, huh, now I see why people have shipped TOS Kirk and McCoy... and TOS Spock and McCoy... and TOS Kirk/Spock/McCoy... ;-)
De Kelley also does really well with the material here. I think in other places he does have a tendency to over-act or to miss the point of his dialogue (despite all the glowing praise that's heaped on him in the DVD special features about how he always understood the heart of a scene and never missed a beat), but here he does beautifully with dialogue that ought to be ridiculous in a situation that was probably rather embarrassing. (OMG, what would Trek have looked like if they'd had an actual budget?)
Y'know, I'm definitely with the William Shatner is a sexy beast camp in this episode as well. It's something about those damn grey t-shirts. :-)

Although, if we posit it as true, the mission ends with S/Mc still being out of sorts and Spock going to Gol. And then! We have TMP and suddenly Spock is holding hands with Kirk. If I was McCoy, I'd be pissed off! Unless it's the beginning of a great threesome.

Man, I wish Trek had more episodes like that in the 3rd season. ;-)

I don't know what the conventional wisdom is about the relative merits of the different seasons, but I do feel like in the first half of season 3 there are more weak episodes. The Empath in particular I hated. On the other hand, there's The Enterprise Incident. I have 11 episodes to go and I think some are popular favorites, so I hope it all balances out. I need a new sewing project to make time to watch the rest!
