I'm sorry to hear that the other people involved in compiling the directory have been so stingy with their thanks and praise. It sounds like you did a lot of the work, and it's awful that they seem so unappreciative of your efforts.
Would it be worthwhile to talk to the people who sent the e-mails, and ask why all your hard work has been overlooked? Is it possible that they're really unaware of all the time you've put into this arduous task?
I would agree that if they don't start showing some gratitude, you're more than justified if you decide to dump the project at the end of the year -- or sooner, even.
Today I sent an email to all parties telling them that I would not be making edits unless asked specifically to do so for a specific reason because I had invested over 100 hours in it already. This was after I compiled a tutorial on how to use the database complete with screenshots and user tips.
They wanted me to go back and check the marked up word document. I said I'd prefer not to go through the word doc and would they send me a list of changes they were suggesting instead.
Already I sense a little resentment from the other data entry person for the comments the newbies are making.
