I seriously have it bad for the tragic older brother mentor figure, you guys. Is there a treatment for this?

Getting up there in spoilers now. )

Re: Ranka bashing, I really, really disliked Ranka in this stretch of episodes because it seemed like every gain Ranka made came at Sheryl's expense, instead of Kawamori finding them a way to grow together. And from episode five onwards, I was 1000x times more attached to Sheryl than Ranka. Still, there was never that much Ranka bashing in the fandom as a whole. Virtually none on the Frontier community that I can remember, some on 4chan but mostly a vocal minority, and... okay, there was a lot on AnimeSuki, but AnimeSuki is a shithole anyway, and it's not like no one bashed Sheryl.

Pineapple cake is a throwback to the original Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross, where the this guy's (he's the leader of Skull Squadron) girlfriend is like "Come home tonight, I'm making pineapple salad" and he's like "Okay" but then he gets seriously hurt in a fight and he makes it to her couch for dinner and then dies. People were expecting that pineapple is fatal to the leader of Skull Squadron, but it's only fatal to womanizers, so that's why Roy and ( ... )

... also on the subject of the edit, Newtype or Newtype Romance or something put together a list of best glasses characters of the year, and it was just Tieria, Zetsubou, and Michael.

I'd heard about a lot of Ranka bashing, but I guess it mostly stayed confined to AnimeSuki and the occasional fandomsecrets thread, heh. I'm a lot more interested in Sheryl as a character, too, but when marathoning the whole thing it's a lot easier to see how Ranka's meteoric ascent and Sheryl's fall aren't going to last.

Yeah, I knew that the pineapple cake was a reference to Roy Fokker's death, but I didn't know the details. I swear, I'll watch the original Macross someday.

Is Kamina an exception then? XD

For the Macross references- in the first Macross series, a character named Roy Focker was injured in battle but went to his girlfriend's house to eat her pineapple salad, and died as a result of not tending to his injuries. Thereafter, pineapple salad became associated with character death. Ozma's character was very clearly based on Roy Focker, so the entire point of episode 17 was to tease old Macross fans.

Oh, and Michel was also based on a character from the first Macross series who married a Zentraedi woman and bore many children with her, living a long and fulfilling life. Thus Michel's death came as a shock to some. :(

Episode 20 is probably my favorite of the series, for both Sheryl's crowning moment of awesome and the utter BAWWWWness of Michel/Klan. Gawd, that is such a horrible way to die, it still makes me cringe. D: I can't even listen to "Diamond Crevasse" without remembering those scenes anymore.

I think fandom may have put me off Kamina a lot. D: That, and the fact that I didn't really like the early episodes of GL.

I didn't know about Michel's basis, but yeah, that certainly sounds like them messing around with the tropes.

Episode 20 was awesome. It's too late now for me to watch another episode, but I'm looking forward to Klan smashing things in the next one. :D
