Keanu as Spike Spiegel is just a rumor. Just a rumor. That is what I keep telling myself; I can only hope that it's true.

In less depressing news:

a) I finally pulled together and submitted another RP sample for Nia, this one taking place exclusively inside her head. Since I know I have other Nia and Simon/Nia fans on my friendslist, I will share ( Read more... )

Thanks. ♥ I worry a lot about how I write Nia, because I try to write her the way she comes off to me in the series--sweetly clueless, terribly nice and occasionally fierce, socially weird and utterly unafraid to ask what normal people would consider stupid questions because she just doesn't consider that shameful--but to some people that makes her seem stupid. And she's not. And I like that she can be clueless and innocent without being stupid.

Oh yeah, she's definitely not stupid. The things she says and thinks make a lot of sense to her, but she's just on a different wavelength from most people. And that's why she can pick up on things or say things that others don't. I actually think she's very inquisitive and has a sort of natural wisdom...

What are the themes of Gurren Lagen? I've only seen parts of one episode and it didn't seem too appealing to me.

I really didn't like the first few episodes, myself. But after some initial stumbling around and irritating gratuitous Gainax-bouncing fanservice, it settles in pretty nicely (even though I still have some issues with the way it treats gender, sigh). The basic theme concerns humanity's incredible potential; from there it tackles irrationality (which it embraces as a strength of humanity), hope, and--most interestingly to me--the mutual shaping of identity. The hero's character largely develops through his relationships with other characters, and while this is true of most characters, in Gurren Lagann it's made especially clear. Kamina and Simon's mutual belief in each other forms a major part of the early show, and Simon and Nia's growing up around and because of each other forms much of the rest. It also emphasizes the cost of human potential and the forming of identity in terms of the sacrifices made by various characters, which, of course, fandom tends to miss liek woah.

I dunno, I think it's perfect.

If Keanu gets cast as Spike, I think I'll cry.

Thanks. :D

(I will not cry. I will fly to the studio on wings of Bebop DVDs and beat the casting directors to death with Hellblazer TPBs.)
