Is it just me, or is fandomsecrets extra fail today? Admittedly this is the first time I've read it since going on vacation, but the trolls were pretty awful today. Not to mention the ranting in the comments about how anyone who thinks Dr. Horrible has sexist elements is a jerk who's just looking for excuses to get offended*I'm bored and I don't feel like doing ( Read more... )

The way I figure.

Yes, it is sexist. Because this is a spoof of old-time hero tales, but instead of the focus on the hero, the focus is on the villain.

It's meant to be how it is. I don't understand why people are so up in arms about it, either. XD

From what I've read about it, that's what I figure, too. But considering how many people toss out characters like Penny without any attempt at irony (see: the recent Batman movies, haha), I can understand why it would frustrate people.

idk, maybe someday I'll watch it myself. When it first erupted all omghuge onto the LJosphere, my eyes were killing me far too badly. D:

Both sides do have valid pints wrt to Doctor Horrible. I'm not sure why that's so hard to understand. And god those secrets pissed me off. GLAD I QUITE FANDOM SECRETS.

As for a fandom, Avatar

I wish I could quit fandomsecrets. :( SOON. SOON. I will make a last few secrets to purge my system, then kick it all to the curb.

Ummm. Avatar. Let's see...

a) In a distant future where the world is sunk into an oppressive dystopia created by abuse of genetic engineering and surveillance technology, Aang and Katara (the former of whom was cloned involving genetic material from the latter, making her technically kind of his mother...but it doesn't matter because they never act like it and family has been all screwed up by the dystopia anyway) defy all the conventions of society by falling in love. Together (along with long-lost brother Sokka and the badass gene-ninja girls who love him/kick his ass) they will overthrow the system and free humanity once more.
b) Berserk. The Gaang defeats the oppressive power of causality, frees the Hawks from hell, and sets Zuko up with Puck.
c) Mai/Suki, because ninja girlfriends together would be too awesome for the world. And Sokka and Zuko's expressions would be priceless.

a) Ever since I got that doujinshi, I have wanted a gay bikers AU involving Griffith seducing tough manly Guts and topping the hell out of him.
b) Clare and Guts fight while angsting over their dead and/or evil loved ones. When Clare kicks his ass, Guts finds out that it's because she was helped by the ~power of Teresa's love within her~ and has angsty flashbacks to Griffith and pre-retard!Casca.
c) Judeau/grownup!Schierke. They would just be so sweet and he'd be really supportive of her and she'd be tough and badass enough for him while still being adorable.

Yeah, there are occasionally still secrets that make me go ♥. One reason I haven't abandoned it yet.

With Dr. Horrible, I kind of assumed since it's sort of all parody, that was a parody, too. But then since there's a lot of times I think that, only to later find out that, no, the writer really wasn't thinking that, I can't really say.

This makes me very sad, that I can't say for sure something like that is a parody. (Her death, I mean).

I dunno. Is Joss usually good about his female characters or no? I only saw Buffy years ago, so.

Yeah, considering the number of people who take Dr. Horrible seriously, one can wonder just how much of a parody it was. Or, well, one could just say that fandom is dumb.

Whedon is well-known for writing better female characters than most, but this is not without complications. There's the fact that his tendency to write ass-kicking female characters at time borders on fetishizing female strength rather than simply respecting it as a normal part of human variation (see also: River in Firefly). There's also, and this is not his fault but his fans', the way that many of his fans seem to think he is the Ultimate Feminist Icon and can Do No Wrong.

It sounds like it's possibly a fandom case, then? If his fandom tends to pedestal his shows and characters.

The more I think on it, the more I can't picture Penny being more than a parody. Her name, how she's so saintly, the hero's girlfriend, the villain's after her, she works with the homeless and doesn't eat meat (and the fans hate her. There's fans of Captain Hammer that hate her). And naturally she meets the hero when he saves her.
