Also, I read that article. I think that person is reading waaaaay too much into things. The director has said several times that Wall-E is just not that deep and people shouldn't try to read messages from it. He's told it to the pro/anti-environmentalists, the pro/anti-Americans-are-fat, etc. And I think he's stated right out the genders that WALL-E and EVE are supposed to represent (even though, you know.. robots! no real gender!).

That aside, they are an adorably cute couple.

They're not saying anything about what the creators intended, though. In fact, I think it's pretty clear they know the creators intended Wall-E to be male and EVE to be female. The question they raise is "how did they go about making robots male and female, and do we necessarily have to agree with them?"

It's all about fan interpretation. :>

Yessss Sasuke/Sakura. I swear that ship is, like, 50% of why I was so into Naruto for so long (and the other 50% was probably Kakashi. And maybe some of the cooler-looking jutsu.)

Sasuke/Sakura was one of those ships that started out kind of "meh" to me and then grew and grew on me as I delved deeper into each of their characters and realized just how well they could work, and how simultaneously dark and hopeful a relationship it would be

God damn but I cannot stand Kate Borenstein. I don't know how she manages to say things I basically agree with while still making me froth at the mouth, but she does it every fucking time. Maybe it's the way she calls 'butch' and 'femme' genders over and overWall-E is kind of more interesting to me as a gender-roles-inverted heterosexual love story than as a love story I can choose to read as gay if I feel like it -- not because no one's ever done a gender-roles-inverted heterosexual love story before, but because there are certain common traps in that kind of story that Wall-E never falls into. (Admittedly, this is partly because the principles, though they vocalize a lot, have virtually no dialogue.) EVE is not the femme fatale you usually get in this kind of story, for example, and not just because femmes fatale don't giggle like that, though, uh, it helps

Yeah, that use of "gender" bugged me too, but I sort of put it aside because I thought the overall gist of the article was interesting. I hadn't read anything else by her, though...and now I'm kind of tempted to, because dammit, if I'm going to get a headache from anything I read anyway, it should be properly headache-inducing!

I think I'm with you in seeing the Wall-E romance as heterosexual but gender-roles-inverted rather than queer, but I like the thought that it can be seen as queer. You've got an interesting point, though. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the movie never makes EVE pick between the false dichotomy of "girly" and "badass." Like you said, she giggles and goes all ^_^ at Wall-E. She also blows shit up.
