So, I finished Gurren Lagann last night.

Gurren Lagann was classic Super Robot formula. I know someone who's seen a lot of Super Robot series, and after watching 2 episodes, he was able to tell me what most of the big spoilers in the series would be and approximately when they would be.
Even if it was typical Super Robot, it was still fun.

My vote for next series, um... Gundam 00 is good. I still think you'll like Mai HiME a lot. And if you like Magical Girl at all but want something epic and awesome, the three Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series are really good.

Yeah, aside from the character designs (in my opinion), TTGL isn't exactly original. But that's okay, it's not meant to be. It's just meant to be fun. :)

Mai-HiME is still on my list! But I've also recently added the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series to said list, after seeing lots of interesting stuff about it on TVTropes. It looks like my sort of thing.

Just be careful, TVTropes has some massive Lyrical Nanoha spoilers.

I don't think I'm going to bother with it, honestly. Fandom would probably just annoy me and I try not to subject myself to irritating sexism whenever possible.

Yeah, this isn't a post to promote the series (the rest of the internets seems intent on doing that already) so much as it is to chronicle my reactions. I don't blame you for not wanting to get into it. I've seen the sexism dismissed as "all anime is like that," but this series is particularly bad.

That it bills itself as "SO MANLY" is a big turnoff anyway. Besides, if I just don't watch it, I can't actively dislike it, and if I'm not actively disliking it, people are not yelling at me about me.

Ugh, the fanservicey Yoko art and figurines creep me out so much. D: Why you gotta hurt us like this, Gainax? But she's so freaking awesome post-timeskip that I partly forgive them. I think we don't really need to feel guilty about liking her/the series, so long as we acknowledge the sexism instead of pretending it doesn't exist ( ... )
