That death is why I stopped watching TNG after first season (and therefore before it got good) - Yar was the only female character on it that didn't annoy the hell out of me at the time.
Of course, I was one of about fifteen people who liked her, so, doom. ;D
I don't have an issue with Crusher--although she doesn't do anything for me either--but Troi was annoying as hell during the first season. Her uselessness is legendary.
Troi gets some character development later on (seek out Face of the Enemy, from one of the later seasons), but yeah, by and large, TNG isn't really a great series for good female characters.
Honestly, the bulk of TNG makes me cringe a little when I watch it nowadays, with a few exceptions.
Crusher isn't bad, but she's nothing special either, really. But "Face of the Enemy" was pretty good for Troi.
I'm enjoying most of the TNG I've been watching lately, but then I have a really high tolerance for cheese. I watched "Conspiracy"--a late first-season episode--the other day and it was awesomely bad. There was an exploding head and a worm-like parasite (that was not a Trill).

Still, by and large I much prefer DS9.
