Lying in the bed she shared with Oliver, Alicia looked up into the clear blue sky above her, through the skylight, when she woke up. She felt as if she had just woken from a dream. A good dream, but a dream nonetheless. Only… it hadn’t been a dream, and the Healer’s words were still ringing in her ears. It didn’t make sense, even less so the calculations. Carefully she tried to feel how she was doing, focusing on her stomach, but nope; there was no nausea at all. That didn’t make sense either, because… wasn’t that what pregnant women always talked about? How they couldn’t keep anything down, or how morning sickness pretty much was there all day, all the time
( ... )
”Pff,” Alicia snorted. ”You have a bump,” she chuckled. Now that she knew and now that Katie was resting her hand on it, she could see that there was a definite bump. “And I’m not glowyish. If I were, it wouldn’t have taken me this long to figure out, because then I would have had at least some alert as for what was going on. Oliver’s mum pretty much told me what was going on, but that wasn’t until yesterday. You, however, just need some sleep, and as soon as your sickness goes down, you’ll be glowing like crazy. You always do.”
She sent Katie a teasing smile. Somehow it felt good, almost cathartic to banter their miseries to each other like this. “Hate you, too,” she slipped out the corner of her smile.
"Going to have more then a bump," she sighed. "I'm going to be huge." Her eyes brightened. "When my mum was pregnant with me she didn't really gain anywhere but her bloody uterus." Turning she smiled at Alicia. "Maybe I'll be that lucky."
Katie stood up and stretched, black dots appeared before her eyes and she sat back down. "I'm rather glad I'm not going through this alone."
She glanced over. "What do you think Ang is going to say?"
When Katie seemed to sway a bit, Alicia put a hand on her elbow as she sat back down again. “Why would you be going through this alone?” Alicia asked, slightly confused by what Katie could mean by it.
“My mum says she was huge with both the twins and me,” she sighed. “I don’t know. Just seems… wrong somehow, that there’s nothing but big boobs in this.” She glanced over at Katie. “I’m your size up there now.” The comment was made with a teasing tone to it, knowing the comments that had come from Katie on it years earlier when she had started developing. “Ang will… Ang will be shocked, I think, then she’ll say that she’s happy, and then she will offer to find us new blokes who are worthy of us. Probably ask to never have to change a poobie diaper. Or… she’ll be a mother hen, or she will be disappointed.” She looked regretfully at Katie. “Sorry, babe, but I honestly don’t know. Wish I did, though.”
Katie glanced down at her own breasts and then at Alicia's. She was just grateful hers hadn't become any larger. Yet. Sighing again Katie shrugged. "Not alone...but, well you know. I don't think a bloke could ever understand this and whether they're there or not..." She shrugged gracefully. "It sometimes feels alone."
She listened to what Alicia had to say and nodded. No one ever really knew how Ang would react. Katie had always felt a little distant from the two, being a year younger, especially after they left but Alicia, with her genuine concern had always been easier to be close to. With Ang, it was different. She was, in a sense, a leader and had always seemed a bit aloof.
"Auntie Ang will probabaly never change a diaper."
”Auntie Ang?” Alicia chewed on that one a bit. “I’ve been thinking of her as Auntie Lina, simply to be more obnoxious. I know she’ll hate that one.” Alicia loved Angelina, like a sister, always had, but even she had to admit that there were points with Angelina that she too wasn’t certain about. She did, however, know that nothing about Angelina was malicious or intented to be.
“You’re not alone,” Alicia continued, “and yes, now that I know what you mean, then I’m glad I’m not alone either. George and Oliver can both be dense, so I think we can both use a hand in getting through to them on some points, eh? And Ang, she’ll come around. She’s outnumbered. She’ll have to give in and indulge us.”
"I think anything with the word 'Auntie' attached to it is bound to drive her just a bit mental." Katie suddenly had this mental picture of Angelina fifty years from now, her hair peppered with grey and that same determined look on her face as she tried to reign in her own children.
"I suppose so," she said, her eyes sad. She should be happy but right now, Katie felt trapped and scared. She thought about asking Alicia, but something was holding her back. She wasn't ready to divulge that just yet. "Are you scared at all? Or has it not sunk in yet?"
Alicia sat back in her seat and closed her eyes for a moment while she thought about Katie’s questions. With a sigh, she nodded. “Yes,” she said and opened her eyes. “I am scared. And no, it probably hasn’t sunk in completely yet.”
Slowly she shook her head, trying to find words to express what she was thinking right now. “But I also know that this is something I want and have wanted for a while even if it’s come quite a bit earlier than I’d expected it, than either of us expected it, and…” A warm, dreamy smile spread on her lips. “And I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
