Hestia's birthday had gone unnoticed by the wizarding world, but the muggle world had remembered. Forwarded by her mother, Sunday had arrived with a couple owls laden with gifts.

Well, two to be exact, but they still made her grin. The first had been a gift from her friend Xavier, which was a burned CD filled with songs that he said reminded him of her. After listening to the CD and looking at the lyrics and translations he'd provided, Hestia desperately prayed he was joking.

The second gift was bigger, and came attached with a long note, which turned out to be form two people, her friends Alessandra and Salma. The two had apparently shopped together and had been unable to agree on anything but what they had gotten her. Then they had both gone on in the letter to blame the other if Hestia didn't like the gift.

Laughing and setting the letter aside, Hestia opened the box, surprised at the grey-green dress inside. She pulled it out and held it against her, watching the soft jersey fall down to about her knees. She looked at her self ( ... )

Rabastan turned on one heel when he heard the knock at the door and headed back inside. "Keep working," he said sharply when he saw his house elf heading for the front door. The house elf bowed and scurried back into the kitchen. Rabastan didn't watch him go and kept heading for the door. He paused in front and straightened his jacket. He'd chosen to go for something on the upper side of neat casual, not wanting to be too formal for this dinner.

He opened the door and smiled. "Good evening, Hestia, and happy birthday. Do come in." He stepped back and gestured for her to enter. "Dinner is still being prepared so I thought we would have drinks in the sitting room upstairs, unless you'd like a tour of the place first?"

Hestia looked up as he opened the door and smiled. He would be much easier to dislike if he weren't handsome, and charming. As it were, Hestia had a hard time reconciling the man before her with the reputation he had. "Good evening to you, and thank you."

Stepping inside, she glanced around the house, faintly jealous, as hers was bare and steal being cleaned room by room. She glanced over at him. "Whichever you prefer, though a tour would be nice." Hestia took another look around. "How long have you been living here? It looks quite settled in." She smiled faintly. "I think you said something about not having been here terribly long."

It was almost unfair that he was completely settled in. Then again, he'd probably had help, and quite a bit more money than she.

Rabastan chuckled. "My house elf, Fellen, did the bulk of the work. He despises filth and refuses to let me set foot in the kitchen. He won't even let me in there to make a cup of tea. Still, who am I to interfere with what he wants when it works out so well for me?"

"A tour it is," he said expansively. He was rather pleased with the opportunity of showing off his new home. It wasn't as grand as Lestrange Manor but it was certainly everything he needed. He'd picked out the decorations and colour scheme himself and he liked the simple elegance of it all ( ... )
