Harry closed his eyes and Apparated back to Annwn. When he opened his eyes, he found himself in the middle of a rather busy street, people passing him in all direction. He blinked. It had been three days since he had been into town and it already looked a lot different now that everybody was up and running around.
He pulled the slip of parchment out of his pocket. It was Ginny’s last owl. George Street, that’s where he would be able to find Ginny, or so she had told him. He looked around and when he didn’t quite find any maps to show him where he was exactly, he figured he should just ask someone.
People passed him and Harry looked at their backs, wondering who he should ask. Spotting an auburn-haired woman walking away from him, he decided he might just as well ask her. He hastened his steps in order to catch up with her. “Miss?” He called out.
Lily walked in a fast pace down High Street, a couple of feet more and she could turn around the corner and onto Arch Way only minutes away from her house. She was threading her way through the crowds, holding onto her bag of groceries when she heard a voice close to her side. She stopped for a second to turn around and look at whoever had spoken to her.
“Yes?” She asked, then her eyebrows furrowed even as her eyes widened. What was James doing calling her ‘Miss’? “James? Did you lock yourself out of the house again?” Lily sighed and placed a hand on her hip, joggling the bag with her other arm.
Harry stopped and took a step back. He couldn’t quite believe his eyes. Could it really be her? But the green eyes and the auburn hair unmistakably belonged to his mother, or what he remembered about her from pictures. The address completely forgotten, he found his ability to speak again. “Mum?” He softly asked, as if he were afraid that she was only an image in his mind.
Blinking, Lily didn’t even feel the bag of groceries slip from her grasp as she took a closer look at him. Green eyes like hers. She took a step closer to him. “Harry?” She couldn’t say anything else, what could she say in a situation such as this. ‘Welcome?’ She snorted inwardly and reached up to brush a lock of hair behind her ears, so that it wouldn’t fall into her eyes and obscure her sight.
Then she shot forward and enveloped him in her arms, squeezing him tightly to her as she breathed in his scent, a far cry from the clean baby smell she remembered. Harry fiercely returned the embrace, tears starting to slip down his cheeks. He scrunched his eyes shut and he didn’t know if he was prepared to ever let go. “I can’t believe it’s you,” he hoarsely whispered. “I can’t believe you’re really here…”
Feeling tears stinging in her eyes; she just nodded and held him tighter. “I’m here. I am right here, but you… What are you doing here?” Lily pulled back slightly to look him over, soaking in his features. So like his father’s, but she could definitely see herself in her son as well. She smiled briefly and then sobered as she felt a pang of fear in her chest. “How did you get here, Harry?”
Harry looked at her, his arms still around her. He had relaxed visibly, but now shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not sure. I ended up at the top of that hill, waking up from a dream. I came here a day later to look around… I’m not sure how I even found this place.” He frowned. “I think it pulled me here or something…”
Studying Harry closely, Lily nodded with a sense of satisfaction and relief. He wasn’t dead then. “You felt like you needed to come here…” She ventured as she reached up to gently brush her fingers through his dark bangs, still feeling the need to make sure he was here. She hugged him again and smiled. “This is rather awkward, I’d wager.” Lily laughed softly.
He leaned into the touch with a small smile. “It is,” he softly replied with a nod. “When I first came here and noticed some of the… dead, I hoped that maybe you were here, but Snape said he hadn’t seen you around the town. So I thought maybe you weren’t after all…” He paused. “But you are, and that’s what matters.”
Lily tilted her head and frowned. Severus Snape was here? As one of the living visitors… or was he dead? She shook her head and sighed, she didn’t know what to make of that information. “Severus Snape is here?” She asked with a cool tone in her voice.
Harry’s eyes narrowed a little at the tone of her voice, but decided not to ask about it. Instead, he nodded. “Yeah, he’s here.”
“I should have guessed.” She muttered to herself. That man could survive anything or at least turn up like a bad Knut. Then she shrugged slightly and shook off any further train of thought about this particular subject. Lily smiled at Harry instead and stepped away from him, only to step on a package of eggs. Looking down, she sighed. “Great….” She started giggling as she pulled out her wand and banished the mess on the cobblestones. She would just have to go back to the store sometime later.
“Just wait till your father sees you. He’ll be hitting the ceiling for sure…” Lily trailed off as she glanced at Harry again and she linked her arms with his, keeping him close to her.
Harry nearly let himself be persuaded by her words. He would love to see his father and spent time with both of his parents, but realisation dawned on him. He had originally come here again to see Ginny and he was torn between both choices. Slowly, he pulled his arms away from hers, bringing on up to wipe the remaining tears off his face. He lowered his gaze and heaved a sigh. “I’m sorry, mum, but I actually had other plans for today.”
The words were spoken in a whisper. He was afraid that he might offend her. Oh, how he wouldn’t love to go with her. Go home with her and see his father, too, but he couldn’t. Not right now.
Arching an eyebrow, Lily looked at him with a small smile and suddenly remembered how this entire meeting had begun. “Which would be the reason you called out to me earlier?” She cocked her head in question.
“Yeah,” he looked up with a small smile and dug into his pocket again for the piece of parchment. “I don’t quite know my way around the town and I am looking for George Street…”
She pressed down the slight twinge of disappointment at having to let go of her son so soon, but Lily reasoned with herself that he would return. She was sure of it. “George Street isn’t too far from here.” Lily said and watched as Harry stuck his hand into his pocket, obviously searching for something, perhaps the address. “It’s just down High Street, which we’re on.” Pointing in the direction she had come from, Lily wondered who he needed to see so badly. “Then right at the market place, past the square and George Street is first on your right.”
Harry half-turned, looking down the street and nodded. “Thanks, mum.” He gave a smile, turning his head to look at her again. He didn’t want to let her walk away, but he had told Ginny he’d come look for her. There would be time enough to catch up with his parents, right? He wanted to say something else to her, but words failed him.
Lily saw a glimmer of indecision in his eyes as he looked at her again and her hands shot out to grab onto the sleeves of his jacket. “You will come and visit, won’t you? We live just down the Arch Way.” She pointed in the direction of the street just a few feet away. “Close to the crossing of St. Edmunds Road.”
Harry nodded, taking her hands in his. “Of course, I will. Maybe not today, but soon. I promise.” He paused. “Should I bring eggs?” He grinned.
Squeezing his hands, Lily nodded with a small smile. She was still reluctant to let go him completely, but at least he would come back. “You had better, young man.” She mock scolded. Then she drew him into a final hug and breathed in his scent, saving it in her memory. “Just because you’re an adult, doesn’t mean you can’t come visit your parents.” She smirked.
“I know, mum.” Harry held her tight for another moment, before letting go of her. He gave her one last smile, before turning to leave. A few steps into High Street, he glanced over his shoulder. “Say hi to dad from me, yeah?” And after that, he was on his way to George Street.
