I've just discovered my Spanish heritage!

I'm currently being quietly amused by this. It turns out that we're actually all Spanish - the orignal 'celtic' people of the British Isles are apparently genetically indistinguishable from the indigenous people of the Iberian Peninsula.

I'm also being deeply amused at the fact that the bacardi ads were more accurate than we all know.

Turns out there IS latin spirit in all of us. And now I know this, I'm going to get some high heels on, and starting slapping jez about in public a bit more. I'm sure he won't mind once I explain it's just my latin spirit showing through.

I don't see how he could object. It's your cultural heritage after all. You should also change your name to Esmerelda. I'm changing mine to Zorro, my cultural hero.

And you know what, Ben? It's good that you're reclaiming your heritage!

And I must say, Spain seems like a much sunnier place to go searching for roots than Ayrshire. I'm really quite relieved that this has all come up now. It's saved me a lot of time getting cold and wet when my forties hit and I want to find out more about my ancestry.

So how does that reconcile with the germanic origin of English?

I'm not sure. I'd have to actually read the study in question to have a clue. I know that the mass migration theory (ie - the theory that lots of saxons called 'Sven' all came over in big boats and took over England, killing all the Celts) has been disputed for years and years - lots of archaeologists believe that it was more of a cultural invasion than a literal one - with a few Germans coming over, and Germanic culture just getting lots more popular. I have read a study tho, which said that there were DNA markers in the current English/Scots/Southern Welsh population which were identical to those carried by the population of Southern Germany, which seemed to prove that ( ... )

As I recall, they're going with linguistic imperialism, with heavy losses (particularly cultural) for the Celts in the early centuries ( ... )

The Gaels have for some time been pretty persuasively argued to be Iberian in origin, and comparatively recent arrivals to boot. After all (and quite apart from archaeological evidence), as mentioned by another poster, their earliest legends say they were, and record that they found people already there when they arrived ( ... )
