Summary: Oneshot: Nostalgic younger Petrelli’s piece.
“Mrs. Cambridge? I’m Nathan Petrelli.” Casting the schoolteacher a perfectly well-rehearsed smile Nathan stepped further into the classroom, hand extended in greeting. The room was typical for a class room; rows of desks, a white board along two walls and of course the teachers’ desk at the front.
For this particular visit Nathan had found a middle ground attire-wise. The top two buttons of his dress shirt were left unbuttoned and he was without the coat to his suit. He moved to the opposite side if the teachers’ desk and reached across it to shake her hand. “Peter’s brother.”
“Mr. Petrelli. Of course. You’ve just been signed on at the DA’s office. I saw your picture in the paper.” Mrs. Cambridge, a moderately attractive woman of barely thirty, removed her glasses as she returned the handshake.
“I’ll apologize for that now.” Nathan grinned. “That seems to be happening a lot lately… my picture in the paper.”
“Yes, you just recently returned from duty overseas.” The teacher acknowledged. “You know that I had expected your parents at this parent-teacher meeting.”
“They had prior commitments so I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.” The excuse rolled out of him easily despite the falseness of it. His parents could have come to this meeting, they simply didn’t want to. And when it was about Peter, Nathan really didn’t mind their disinterest. Subconsciously, he couldn’t help but be pleased that she knew so much about him. Normally it bothered him when people he weren’t familiar with knew so much about him without him having said a word. But in this instance, it would suit his purpose. “But I promise that I’m not so bad after a little while.”
The teacher smiled and indicated one of the school desks. “Have a seat.”
After a momentary glance to the small desk, he looked back to Mrs. Cambridge with one brow arched. “No thank you. I’m fine. I actually wanted to speak to you about your sending Peter to detention this past week.” He took control of the meeting and the fact that Peter’s school teacher was caught off guard by his conversational direction was evident in her features. Good. He liked that.
“He spoke back to me… quite rudely. And this wasn’t the first time.” She defended her actions, standing up in attempt to be on even ground with him instead of craning her neck to look up to him.
“Peter’s been going through a lot. And if he continues to get detention he’ll be kicked out of the school. We both know that.” Nathan said, voice matter of fact as if he here making the latest business deal.. “Now… as you can clearly see, I’m the one who takes care of him. He lost me for quite some time while I was in the military. Look back over his records. He had perfect grades and never had any disciplinary problems until-“
“Mr. Petrelli, I’m well aware that Peter’s slip in both academics and discipline has been in the last few years. But that is no excuse. Your reputation in this school is still echoed in the hallways. Automatically your achievements leave Peter with certain expectations in both areas.”
His eyes narrowed at the blatant interruption. No one interrupted him. “In case you haven’t noticed, Peter is not me… nor should he be expected to be. That’s unfair to him and quite honestly, it’s unfair to me also.” And no one, least of all this woman could understand how hard he tried to make sure that his brother never, ever had to be him.
His chin lifted just slightly and in the matter of seconds he was the most domineering, commanding person in the room. It was the Petrelli persona that his parents had taught him at a very young age. “And since you seem to know so much, then you’re also aware that I control the charities and foundations that my family gives annual donations to. There’s no reason for us to continue to shell out our money to this school if Peter isn’t in it and if he doesn’t graduate from here.”
A slow, wickedly charming smile spread over his lips when the realization of where he was going with this flickered over the Mrs. Cambridge’s features. He didn’t actually have to say the words. If she were even associated with losing that amount of money for the school, she wouldn’t have a job. It was just one of the ways that the Petrelli’s kept a tight control on everything they were even remotely involved with. “Now, what are we going to do about this? I’m sure there’s some happy medium that we can both meet at… something that suits us both?” Without so many words, he stated the ‘my way or no way’ option.
Her lips pressed into a thin line for a moment before she finally nodded. “I’ll speak with the principal. We’ll wipe this last detention off of his record.”
His features softened around the edges and he granted a slow, approving nod. “Thank you. I’m glad that we could reach this understanding.”
