Day 17 - Fave Donna Moment
How do you choose just one Donna moment as your favorite? I was reading flydye8's Donna Noble post yesterday and she included a video of the top 10 moments and for each one I thought, "Oh! I'll choose that one!" In the end, I decided to go with the moment that I think defines Donna's journey. It also gives me goose bumps like you wouldn't believe. It's not my hands-down favorite, but that would be impossible. I love Donna too much to choose a favorite.
Yesterday I talked about how Martha Jones didn't have much to improve upon. Donna was Martha's opposite in that regard. She started out as a woman who's idea of excitement was "a new flavor Pringle," (as former fiance, Lance, described her) and became a woman who saved the world. Twice. Once with her mad typing skillz. I'm going to talk about the other time she saved the world.
In "Turn Left," Donna has been tricked into changing a decision that was the catalyst for her meeting the Doctor, saving his life, and, eventually, traveling with him. Because of this one tiny change, the Doctor dies and everything that he had done to save the Earth from that point forward was undone as well. The whole of Southern England becomes uninhabitable, the Adipose kill 16 million Americans, the Sontarans scheme is foiled by the Torchwood team and they all die in the process. And those are just the biggies.
Rose, traveling from the other Universe, convinces Donna to travel back in time in her jury-rigged time machine to change that one tiny decision and save the world.
People hate Rose for this, but she's been nothing but honest from the beginning.
ROSE: Three weeks time. But you've got to be certain. Because, when you come with me, Donna... sorry... so sorry, but... you're gonna die.
So when Rose and UNIT get Donna strapped up and ready to flash back in time she has this speech:
DONNA: I'm ready!
ROSE: One minute past ten.
DONNA: Because I understand, now. You said I was going to die, but you mean this whole world is going to blink out of existence. But that's not dying. Because a better world takes its place. The Doctor's world. And I'm still alive! That's right, isn't it? I don't die? If I change things, I don't die? That's... that's right, isn't it?
ROSE: I'm sorry.
DONNA: But I can't die! I've got a future! With the Doctor - you told me!
Despite the horror being told in no uncertain terms that she is going to die, Donna does what she needs to do to save the world.
I also want to note the music in this scene. I love how it starts out triumphant and exciting and is slowly overtaken by the screechy strings and stops abruptly with Rose's "I'm sorry."
This really needs to be watched, because the script can't convey the intensity of the scene. Unfortunately, this is the best video I could find.
