On the subject of art and inspiration.

I am not an arty person. I rarely have a burning desire to dash to see a piece of installation art but oh my,Banksy and friends have outdone themselves in Weston-Super-Mare and I am gutted that I am too far away to go and experience it ( Read more... )

Holy COW this is fantastic! Could you go? Please go for me? Suck up all the dystopian misery! LOL
I love the shot of the pinwheel fan with the cotton, or torn paper left trapped in the blades. WOW And that truck carousel? And the castle and the sliced up distorted mermaid. This is a major art endeavour. What did they say 58 artists? WOW. We were just talking about Banksy and I hadn't seen any of his stuff but this is awesome. Thanks so much for sharing.
Not that I * cough * like this kind of stuff or anything LOL

The pinwheel fan is snarled up by the sort of plastic we use over here for shopping bags I think. It is a huge environmental problem which we as a society have been backward in solving. It's weird to me after all this time that Banksy is still constantly referred to as a 'street artist' in the media and art world over here as if to devalue what he does. The more conservative papers still refer to his art as graffiti - and yes that's where he started and still does pieces but what he does is awesome. If they can display Venus of the Rags at the Tate I wonder why Banksy's ventures are so looked down upon. Or rather I don't. I'm pretty much sure it's because the likes of me, the ordinary person 'get him' and enjoy it. It makes me feel a bit better that a professional artist can appreciate it too.
A lot of his work is highly political. The lake with the boat of illegal immigrants with some drowning is an arrow through the eye of right wingers right now. It is spot on.
I should probably stop now - yes, dystopian, nothing better!

I live in Bristol - which is about 25/30 minutes drive from me and I am hoping to go on Thursday night.... as long as I can get tickets via the website - I am most definitely not going to be queueing for 4 hours just to get in! If I do manage to get in I'll post some pics!

Although I may drive down there tonight to look at the size of the queue!

Ooh I do hope that you get in okay and (enjoy?) it for the rest of us. Got to wonder if a queue is all part of the experience. I was not far off earlier in the summer - so bad timing formy summer hols!A tripfrom Scotland to Weston is not practical with no guarantee ofeven getting in. Is there anything else interesting in Weston these days if you take a drive down?

Wow, thanks for letting me know. What great pics to see. So many great pieces of political art. The refugee one - that is doubly poignant right now - the artist called it first. The simple b&w poster of the man with a banquet and a family with nothing really hit home in the current political climate here too. So envious!

I totally missed the symbolism of the Cinderella carriage. I didn't realize the paparazzi flash bulbs weren't the crowd but part of the exhibit as a commentary on Princes Di. DOH!

Yes! I've been seeing photos going around Tumblr. It looks so cool. I wish TOEs could all go together! How great would that be?

Dismaland is such a great idea as a response to the over-commercialized Disney franchise -- the ultimate entertainment which is ultimately disappointing -- so glossy and bright and perfect. Dismaland is the opposite, I think -- dark and broken and creepy and far more interesting and satisfying.

I want to go!

Oh, it's lovely to see you here - yes it would be lovelier in person at Dismaland. It probably says something deep about the TOEs that we would find this version far more interesting than the real thing!Give us all the dark and dystopian creations.
