Friday is hat day at the school. Declan is obsessed with the idea of me making this hat. from Adventure Time. Thus history repeats itself.  I made my mother make me dresses like this  when all the other girls were wearing torn up sweat shirts ala Flashdance or lace overblouses ala early Madonna.  I said to Declan, "What do the other kids think of

Yeah, I was like that, too. On the one hand it was tough on me, and I used to wonder if I should've tried to fit in better. Nowadays, I find myself trying to be more like that weird kid.

It was tough, but one thing he is reminding me is that it was a value choice for me. I didn't want to do things the other kids were doing just to fit in. As a parent, I want to protect him from the things I suffered, but sometimes efforts to protect a child just inflict a different kind of suffering on them. I could force him to conform to protect him from teasing and bullying, but that probably isn't going to improve his quality of life.
