Right. Hi.
Remember how I said I was moving to Edinburgh for a month for an intense course to get certified as a teacher? And then I didn't post for a month? And then I didn't post for another month? Yeah, let's just say sh*t got real, yo. Before you ask, the papers for the certificate will be mailed to me in six-to-eight weeks and I haven't found a

I love your H50 tag! I'm still enjoying the heck out of the show, but completely agree with you, and sometimes feel a little sick about what a right wing fantasy it is. I would love to see any and all of your wish list realized--in fic or on TV--particularly Steve having to face the consequences of his lunatic behavior--
re: the Japanese cousins--I don't know anything about Hawaiian culture, but that does seem vaguely plausible. I don't know if they are supposed to be native Hawaiian or just Hawaiians of Asian descent (the surnames are confusing, but, y'know, intermarriage and all that)--and many Americans--old and new immigrants--have cousins in other parts of the world.
And I saw this recently about a love interest for Chin Ho--so maybe it will be interesting--
Anyway--welcome back, bb!

That is so sweet of you! I'm fine, I'm fine, it's just that I tend to write only long posts, and they take time, and then I don't have time so I postpone, and then the post becomes even longer... and so on ;-P
and many Americans--old and new immigrants--have cousins in other parts of the world. Yeah, but the point being the us <--> them mentality of Hawaiians and I'm not sure where I'm supposed to draw the line. Should Steve be considered a native, because his family's been there three generations? But what about the actual tribal culture, and and... I just had a horrible feeling that in the producers' mind any asian can stand in for a native Hawaiian, you know?

On a purely superficial note, even though I hated the super saturated colors on CSI: Miami I think they work really well H5-0. I think that's because Alex isn't anywhere close to being as creepy as Horatio Caine.
Are you going to have more discussions about H5-0?

Based on their names and on the characters from the original version, Kono Kalakaua at least probably has some native Hawaiian ancestry, but the majority might be Asian. It doesn't necessarily have to be restricted to one Asian ethnicity either--a large proportion of residents have around 3-5 ethnicities in their background (i.e. someone with Portuguese, Chinese, Hawaiian, German, and Korean background wouldn't be unusual). Chin Ho Kelly definitely has Chinese and Irish, but native Hawaiian could be there too. [The original characters were played by actors of Hawaiian (Kono) and Chinese (Chin Ho) descent, so one might argue they didn't have as much of a mix of ethnicities as the reboot characters.]
