DURARARA Vol.2 Interview with Izaya snippet.

Feb 01, 2010 14:27

I know I promised less Izaya...but it's Saturday afternoon. I feel relaxed and a wee bit shippy.
So here you are. The Shizuo part is way longer so I'll see if I can get back on that. Both are probably gonna be in Ep. 5 btw.

"Who told you about me?"

The man was playing with a shogi* piece as he said nonchalantly with eyes devoid of any emotion.

"If it's someone who knows where I live, it's gotta be one of my VIPs."

He was way younger than I imagined.

Way too young for owning an upscale apartment in Shinjuku. Too ridiculously young, in fact, for an information broker who supposedly controls the flow of underground information in this town. He had to be still in his twenties.

His name was Orihara Izaya. I got his address from the Chief Chef at Russian Sushi, but his name already turned up a couple of times when I interviewed certain information-savvy people on the topic of "who's the most fearsome in Ikebukuro."

"Ah...I, I have my source."

I said nothing about the Chief Chef. A sphinx's smile appeared on the young man's beautiful face as he leaned his slender body into the sofa.

On the table between us there was a shogi board. It had three king pieces on it - something that struck me as rather odd.

"Telling an information broker that you 'have your source'...whatever. I don't really care."

I began to explain to him the series of interviews I had been doing, carefully avoiding any mention of Russian Sushi. To my astonishment, he seemed to have been reading my articles.

"Tokyo Incidents, is it? ...Featuring weird events or noteworthy societies in Tokyo...speaking of which, I remember reading that the next issue is gonna be an Ikebukuro special taking up the entire volume?"

"That's right. I take it that we could go straight down to business if you happen to be so familiar with it?"

I was starting to be relieved thinking that I would at last be able to do my job.

But how wrong I was.

"- How's your daughter doing in high school, by the way?"

"I beg your par-"

"Mr. Shiki from Awakusu-kai is a gentleman, wouldn't you agree?"

"........"

Then it dawned on me.

So that was what is was.

The "source" Shiki mentioned was no other than this very Orihara Izaya sitting right across to me. Not only had I been dumb enough not to realize that, but also had I come all the way to meet the one who had sold Shiki my information.

Anger, regret, and a trace of fear.

I had no idea what face to make as all these emotions became entangled inside of me.

Yet the information broker, not paying attention to my situation, simply spoke again.

"Whatever...not that I care. The most fearsome in Ikebukuro...but there are way too many in that part of town. Let me see. To pick only one...Simon, if you're talking about fighting with bare fists. If any kind of weapon is allowed...I think it's gotta be Shizu-chan...right."

"Shizu......chan?"

"Heiwajima Shizuo. I don't know what kind of job he does right now. Nor do I want to know."

That name. Again.

I did not ask him about Shizuo, yet this Orihara Izaya told me the same name. Heiwajima Shizuo. But I still couldn't picture just what kind of fearsomeness he was.

"Pardon me...but could I just ask what kind of person Mr. Shizuo is?"

"I don't even wanna talk about him...for me, it's enough to just have to know about him."

"But please, let me do my job...?"

"The only reason I want to know his information is that he is a pain to deal with. But that is enough to piss the heck out of me..."

I was about to press on anyway despite signs of this being futile. Suddenly Mr. Orihara smiled a curious smile.

"There. I have other things to attend to, so I'll refer you to someone who happens to hit it off with him....if you want to know about him that badly, go find - "

Really, I was not getting anything done at all. Turned out it was pointless to have come all the way to Shinjuku. I could have pressed him further, but it was not the best thing to do when he knows my address and where my daughter goes to school.

I could only hope that the one he referred me to would be more helpful.
