DURARARA Vol.3 Shingen/Izaya/Namie scene

Note: Ep. 4 of the anime should cover the backgrounds of Shinra and Shingen so I'm just gonna be lazy here.

Some Apartment in Shinjuku

Something struck Izaya as strange the moment he opened his own apartment door.

There were shoes in the doorway that weren't his.

Namie's pumps were also there, which meant that besides her there had to be another person in the apartment.

Yet he hadn't got any heads up from Namie. The shoes were also too gigantic to belong to any of the teenage girls who worshipped him like Saki, even if she was into the gothic lolita way of dressing.

Izaya narrowed his eyes in alarm, and was about to retreat back outside when a vague voice from inside the apartment lessened the tension in the air.

"The word 'fate' just is convenient, don't you think?"

The person was obviously speaking to Izaya, though at present refusing to be seen.

"Making the collection of past coincidences and contingencies look like they were supposed to come together this way...making sense and ignoring logic at the same time...I figured it's best to ask you since that's what you do - must there be this thing called 'fate'?"

"It's not cool to apply so much cosmetics to a word like 'fate', not to mention bordering on dumbness, Mr. Kishitani Shingen."

"Woo-hoo! How did you know it was me? You know my voice?"

A man wearing a gas mask sat in the living room where the voice had come from. Namie sat beside him with a resigned look on her face.

The man in gas mask, Shingen, was holding a pistol to Namie's waist with his left hand, while casually filling out the crossword puzzle Izaya had left on the desk with his right one.

"Hard not to when you always speak through a gas mask. Also because you're the only person I know who speaks in grand narratives like that."

"Hmm-mm. This crossword magazine sure is a feast for fanatics...let's see, painter who bloated that his works could heal punitive diseases...that would be...who could that be? Starts with the sound Gi and ends with Ta. All right, skip. And then there's horizontal...German artist born in Krauss Island. I think I've heard of this one. Krun...Kruner something...you got any idea? Help me out here."

"Please, don't touch others' unfinished crossword puzzles and get all serious about them."

Izaya snatched the magazine out of Shingen's hand and sat on the sofa facing him.

"Busying your right hand with crosswords while your left hand has a gun on people. You sure have got some kinetic talent. I still don't see what you're doing holding that fake pistol to Miss Namie's waist, though."

"Huh, smart of you to see through that."

The only person whose face fell at this conversation was Namie. Judging by the looks of it, she had until this moment thought that pistol was real.

"...You tricked me."

"Ahahah. For a lawful individual like me it's near impossible to get hold of a real gun in Japan. Illegal possession of weapons is a more serious offense than you think. Thanks to Miss Namie though I was able to get past the security system in this building."

"Well done, well done. Now if you would just lock the door when you leave..."

Shingen gave a dry laugh from within his gas mask at Izaya's sarcastic reply, and continued in an unaltered tone:

"Oh, don't be so cold to the father of your high school pal. Now that I think of it though...Shinra hung out way too much with you and Shizuo. That has to be where he got his twisted personality, isn't it? From being sandwiched between two extreme types like you and Shizuo?"

"Don't you feel like you're clearly passing your buck to others? And for your information, I was not hanging out with Shizuo."

"Ah, of course. There always had to be Shinra in the middle. You and Shizuo were like fire and water."

"......So what brought you here?"

As if unwilling to discuss any more of his past, Izaya asked with an expressionless face.

Taking notice of Izaya's attitude, Shingen pocketed his fake pistol before speaking.

"Well, I think you should have known since the moment you saw me here..."

"- where exactly...are you keeping Certy's head?"
